Gaps in genetic knowledge affect conservation management of kiwi ( Apteryx ) species

چکیده

Worldwide, there is growing appreciation of the importance integrating genetic information into conservation management. However, are commonly occurring problems which impact on doing this successfully. This issue well illustrated by kiwi Apteryx species. Like many endangered taxa, extant populations small, fragmented and isolated, raising concerns potential inbreeding depression. Accordingly, includes discussion management translocations. To date, taxa have been subject 41 studies. Here we provide first synthesized review these We conclude that despite impressive study effort, current understanding genetics insufficient to guide management, predict translocation outcomes manage biological diversity achieve future sustainability explain why, outline research questions can be addressed with new genome science technologies. Using technologies build foundation work already undertaken, see a great opportunity address key issues for North Island Brown Kiwi mantelli central threatened Specifically, suggest historical, disjunct, mainland combined translocations offshore islands generated unique case studies investigate effects fragmentation, cessation gene flow, inbreeding, outbreeding hybridization diversity.

Genetic variation, systematics and management of kiwi (Apteryx spp.)

Kiwi (Apteryx: Struthioniformes) are a family of ratite birds confined entirely to New Zealand. Since 1813, at least ten species have been described. Recent taxonomy has accepted three species: A. owenii (little spotted kiwi), A. haastii (great spotted kiwi) and A. australis (brown kiwi). Apteryx australis has three subspecies: A. a. australis (South Island); A. a. mantelli (North Island); and ...

The eradication of invasive mammal species: can adaptive resource management fill the gaps in our knowledge?

Invasive alien species (IAS) threaten global biodiversity; they are the major cause of species extinction on offshore islands. Management of IAS requires data on the ecology of species in their new environment, how these species respond to management, and how these processes interact. Often, however, there is a paucity of information on key biological parameters that are critical to making mana...

Genetic characterization of great sturgeon brood stocks- recommendations for the conservation management and aquaculture

The great sturgeon, Huso huso, is one of the most important cultured sturgeon species in Iran, which effective management of aquaculture production of this species requires knowledge of broodstock structure, mating patterns, and genetic diversity of broodstock. The aim of the present study was the application of microsatellite DNA analysis for genetic diversity assessment in the first generatio...
